Patching Roof Felt Inside

Patching material may not adhere properly if the roof area is damp.

Some roof leaks are tough to locate. Roof leaks can occur when the flashing around a vent pipe or chimney separates from the roof and creates a gap. Make the final repair as soon as weather permits. Water tends to follow along roof rafters or roof decking.

Sometimes the water shows up at a ceiling spot distant from the leak. I have a normal uk type cold roof with interlocking tiles over the roofing felt. I rather not have to get all the tiles removed to repair them. A common problem is when roofing felt on a roof with an enclosed soffit disintegrates around the eaves of a roof.

Once you ve found the leak you can make a temporary leak patch from some plywood or shingle and some roofing tar. Is it feasable to restore the missing felt from the inside without removing roof tiles. If it s a small hole patch the felt then duct tape a piece of cardboard same size as hole onto the roof from the inside. There are a few small rips in the felt about 5cm or 10cm long.

Repairing a roof leak from the inside is a temporary fix only. If your ceiling has a plastic vapor barrier between the drywall and the attic insulation push the insulation aside and look for flow stains on the plastic often water runs to openings in the vapor barrier such as at ceiling light fixtures. It s about a 2 mtr length and two rafter spaces wide. I don t understand how you can access your roof felt from inside your attic unless you have a hole in the wood roofing material.

A section of the felt is missing from the inside of my pitched tiled roof. The tiles are the fairly common large concrete type and the roof has 4 x2 rafters and standard 1 battens. Use a putty knife to spread the tar into the leaking hole on the inside of your roof. Repairing felt around the eaves.

As the tiles are in a good state i don t have any leaks at present but i rather fix the problem before it becomes an issue.
